Description
When your home, sits on a acre of natural Sonoran Desert landscape, you will have many desert dwellers, who make your home, their home. There is always animal and bird action going on in my desert garden of joy, especially when the summer monsoon, is a summer nonsoon.
It was unseasonably hot at this 3500' elevation. So, per the Arizona Fish and Game advice in the lack of water for the native animals, we set out a flat pan of water, as well as watering down some of the desert flora. This makes the ground cool and damp on a hot July day like this.
It seemed that the word had gotten out to all the critters, that we were running some sort of resort at the desert beach or rest stop, as they had been coming and making themselves right at home. and trying to stay cool.
Very unusual but, I had a greater roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus), come right up to my back porch to take advantage of the much needed water. Moving ever so slightly and slowly, it allowed me to photograph it as it was checking out my desert landscape. I have never seen them do that before. They usually hurry in and hurry out.
Just one of the many poses, this roadrunner graced this photographer with, as I never have gotten in close like this. Looking like he wants to say something. I didn't realize what a beautiful coloring they are.
With Covid-19 keeping us from traveling to a beach resort, it did not stop my visitors from the animal world from doing so.

Marlin and Laura Hum
What a fabulous shot! It must have been a very special encounter.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Marlin and Laura for your lovely comment and support. I really appreciate it! It was a one of a kind summer due to our normally rainy weather. All the desert fauna kept us entertained. This was a great surprise and special moment indeed. He made himself right at home, digging out a spot in the dirt, and laying down.
Patricia Kilian
Such beautiful markings and eyes! Great capture.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much Patricia! The greater roadrunner generally doesn't give me the opportunity to notice its markings and eyes, as they take off in a hurry. I appreciate your wonderful comment.
Kim Tran
Stunning bird portrait, Janet! L/f
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Kim, as found it stunning as well. Always difficult in the past to photograph them, as among all birds capable of flying, the roadrunner is the fastest bird on the ground
Angela Davies
Great close up LF
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Angela. It was a great day indeed for me to interact with this roadrunner, as they usually take off right away.
Jasna Dragun
Great bird portrait! l/f
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Jasna. It was a great event indeed, to photograph such a marvelous southwestern bird, such as the roadrunner.
Elvira Peretsman
Amazing! l/f
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Elvira. It was an amazing situation indeed. Probably never to be repeated to have a roadrunner grace my home. Cooling off from a dry monsoon season, is great incentive. I didn't realize how colorful they are.
Frank Barnitz
Wonderful close-up portrait with good focus on the eye.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Frank, for your wonderful comment. I really appreciate it! It was a surprise visit to my desert acre of joy. When you provide a water source, in a season that normally rains everyday, the critters come. I never had a roadrunner ever hang around before, especially to take such intimate shots. It was a photographer's dream.
Johanna Zettler
Splendid portrait photo of the roadrunner
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Johanna for your wonderful comment. It was a splendid moment, indeed.
Jasna Dragun
Fantastic close up profile captured of this roadrunner bird. I only know him from the cartoon. :) l/f
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Jasna for your visit and comment. It was a fantastic day indeed to get this. The roadrunner cartoon doesn't give one the sense of how truly colorful they are.
Alinna Lee
Great details!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Alinna for sharing your thoughts about this Arizona greater roadrunner. It was a photographer's dream to photograph this rare moment. He stayed awhile, even later finding him staying cool in my banana yucca plants, under a palo verde tree.
Dave Dilli

Janet Marie replied:

Mary Deal
What an incredible capture of this fast-moving escapee. Great catch.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Mary. It was an incredible moment indeed, but it was not in a hurry, as it was a nonsoon monsoon summer in 2020. All the desert fauna visited my desert acre to get water and cool off. This roadrunner took off his running shoes for a while. Even digging out a whole in the ground to lay down. Something I had never witnessed before, as they always would take off when they saw me. It was the bunny beach resort and friends.
Christiane Schulze Art And Photography
Fabulous roadrunner portrait Janet L
Janet Marie replied:

A great capture!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Andrew. You are so right. I doubt that I will have such an opportunity any time soon. I feel quite blessed to have this amazing desert bird grace my home that sits on a beautifully lush Sonoran Desert acre of joy.
Joy Watson
Fantastic work Janet. Love his markings.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Joy! When you have a fantastic subject, if all things go right, you have fantastic photographic moments like this. I will probably never experience something like this again, as they always take off when they see you. Or fly to a higher vantage point. They do have beautiful markings, don't they. I didn't realize that until I viewed all my close-up photography.
Douglas Taylor
What a remarkable moment you've captured here, Janet! Wonderful photograph of this beautiful creature, and an instant fav here!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Douglas for your kind comment. It truly was an remarkable moment for this exquisite bird to allow me to photograph with every angle without taking off. I am glad I could provide a rest stop for all the desert critters that summer of 2020, when we had no nonsoon monsoon weather. Creating a water shortage for the animals. It was like a resort or something the way they all came and made themselves at home. I am honored for the privilege to photograph all this beauty during a lock down situation around the world.
Jane M Dahl
I have always loved their beautiful colors. Such amazing birds. This is a totally awesome shot! So glad he paid you a visit. L/F Featured in American Desert Southwest.
Janet Marie replied:

Sharon W
WOW! Janet this is fantastic! What an amazing close up capture of this guy!! What a situation, so lucky for you, but I do hope all the creatures find the water they need! Excellent and awesome capture once again!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Sharon for your awesome comment. I really appreciate it! This image happened July 30, 2020. So the animals didn’t deal with a water situation in the summer 2021 or 2022. I have a lot of photography from 2017 until now and I am determined to post my work. I do have a few more poses to share. You will have to check out my image of this roadrunner laying on his belly in a scooped out area he made in the dirt.
