Description
As you start the descent down from the Acropolis, through the Propylaea, the view across Athens is spectacular. A feeling of accomplishment takes hold of me, that this is a breathtaking privilege. One I would never have imagined I would embark on.
No longer having the guide (a waste of money, not worth it) to rush me. I could stop and take in the view of this famous, historic landmark, The Areopagus Hill, (also known as Mars Hill). The modern city of Athens, Greece, with its beautiful mountains, serves as a background to this prominent place in history. "Athenian Acropolis View-Then And Now!"
The Areopagus is a prominent rock outcropping located northwest of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Areopagus or "Hill of Ares," (Ares was the Greek god of war) was the traditional meeting place of the chief council of Athens. The term “Areopagus” may refer to the actual hill or to the council.
It is especially popular with travelers for its connections with a speech made by the Apostle Paul. The Areopagus, like most city-state institutions, continued to function in Roman times, and it was then that the Apostle Paul delivered " A Powerful Speech," to the learned men of Athens, as recorded at Acts 17:16-34, a model of eloquence, tact, and discernment. Establishing common ground and adapting to his audience.
