Description
While driving along 42 Forest Road, to the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon, part of the Coronado National Forest Recreation Area, in Portal, Arizona, I was taking in all the beautiful surroundings.
With its soaring cliffs, pocked with caves and punctuated with pinnacles, coming into view as you arrive. While riding along, I just had to stop, and take in the amazing beauty before me. Special beauty for me was when I spotted all these butterflies on these yellow wildflowers.
Turned out to be a queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus). It was most enamored with this rubber rabbitbrush shrub (Ericameria nauseosa), full of yellow flowers. It gets its name due to the smell given off when the flowers are crushed, described as pineapple-like by some, and foul and rubbery by others.
I wonder which smell was given off for this queen butterfly, as well as the painted lady butterfly, clouded sulfur butterfly, ladybugs and other small unknown bugs.
They all probably didn't care as it was November, and summer flowers were gone, making these vivid yellow blooms quite attractive.
By the way, I am quite nutty for butterflies (I refer to them as a flutterby, as they don't stay put for long, most flutter by me), and I wasn't disappointed when this queen decided to showoff her charm.
If you look closely, you can see a little ladybug on the top flower.

How amazing....weed with beauty. FL
Janet Marie replied:
Actually Debby, this is not a weed, but a native perennial shrub. They provide a vivid color and pollen source for insect, as other plants are fading. I have only photographed them in National Forests. This time was early November. Nothing else was blooming, and various butterflies were loving it.
