Description
This is "The Erechtheion." It is an ancient Greek temple, on the north side of the Acropolis, in Athens, Greece, which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. So aptly titled, "Erechtheion-Dedicated To The One Of I Love!"
The temple is unusual in that it incorporates two porches. One at the northwest corner which is supported by tall Ionic columns (as seen on the right side of image), and one at the south-west corner (as seen on the left side of the image), which is supported by six massive female statues, the famous Caryatids, or "Porch Of The Maidens," (considered the real stars of the Erechtheion). These maidens stand 7 ft. 7 in. tall, and are exact replicas of the 5 originals which are on display at the "Acropolis Museum" after being removed in 1979 to preserve them from the elements of modern times.
It was built from Pentelic marble, but also contains traces of iron, which over time have oxidised, giving the marble a soft honey color (as seen here) although more evident at sunrise and sunset.

Yes---very famous spot. I studied Greece, ancient history in college...Beautiful work of art. Well done and an easy FAVORITE!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Reynold, for returning to visit this once again. I was familiar with the acropolis, but not what all was on this great rock formation. It was hot and crowded in May of 2018, (not yet the on season too, that would be June). So I am glad that I was able to pull off capturing some of the history there. I always appreciate your visits and comments left. I truly appreciate it. Janet 💕

Makes me envious that you visited this famous place! BIG WINNER award for this bold statement Beautiful work of art. Well done and an easy FAVORITE!
Janet Marie replied:
Reynold! What a wonderful surprise. Always a pleasure for you to stop by my gallery and leave your lovely thoughts about my artwork. Thank you for that. I also appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites. I do have to pinch myself that I actually was there. A big thank you to my daughter and son-in-law who took us on this trip. Trying to fit this all in, in one day was quite tiring, I had held of from posting Athens, as I was overwhelmed by all that we saw, and wondered if I would remember what everything was. The feeling of seeing all this history, is soMewhAt surreal. (it's interesting to note, that only men have commented on this one) 💕Janet

So totally amazing that such things survived. Wonderful to see. Thank you! L/F
Janet Marie replied:
Wow, William! Always a pleasure, to have you stop by gallery to share your wonderful expressions about my artwork. Thank you for that! It was a trip of a lifetime and I am finally sharing that wonder. I wasn't in a good space when I returned last June. Facing many unsettling events when we returned. On that day, it was so hot, crowded, a guide rushing the four of us (it was all about the money, not the service), I wasn't sure whether I actually was able to capture the emotion of being in Athens with so much history. I would never have thought I would be standing in such a historic place. But I was pleasantly surprised after all, at the moments I was able to capture (considering the circumstances). I am glad that you enjoyed seeing this bit of history, and have chosen this as one of your favorites. I truly appreciate it. 💕Janet

Wonderful capture Janet, its amazing how the ruins of the past managed to survive for so long.
Janet Marie replied:
Neal! Always a pleasure to have you visit my gallery of artwork and share your wonderful thoughts about it. Many of these ancient ruins here at the Acropolis have undergone restoration and much of the statues and artifacts, have been moved to the huge Acropolis Museum. But you are right, it is amazing to see ancient history of by-gone times surviving to the present. Thank you for your comment, it is most appreciated.
