It was glorious spring day, in the Arizona Sonoran Desert. The desert becomes a showy display of color. It was no exception this day in April 2019, at the Saguaro National Park Rincon Mountain District, Tucson, Arizona. (USA).
I especially wanted to capture some of the beautiful colors of springtime in the desert. You couldn't pick a better place, as the desert landscape is bursting with color of wildflowers and cactus blooms. Driving along the one-way 8-mile scenic drive of Cactus Forest Loop, one cannot help but be "High On The Hog At Saguaro National Park," with their dazzling, vibrant pink flowers. One of my favorite cactus springtime blooms.
The hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus fendleri var. fasciculatus) has earned its name in Arizona's Sonoran Desert, because its short, spiny stems resemble hedgehogs. The most common hedgehog-cactus varieties have intense magenta flowers, although the flowers may also appear in shades of pink, purple and lavender. The blossoms last for five days, opening in the morning and closing at night. The Robust Hedgehog, is one of 50 varieties.

Very nice, Janet! Just to let you know that the hedgehogs here in the Tucson Mountains are starting to bud 3/7/20. A bit early, but spring is well on its way. Yay!

I live on an acre of natural desert, and have lots of hedgehog cactus, staghorn cholla, chain fruit cholla, cane cholla, varieties of prickly pear cactus and lots of palo verde trees. Looking forward to all the blooms that will be coming. Going to visit Picacho Peak this week for poppies. I appreciate you sharing with me about the hedgehog in the Tucson Mountains. I live at 1000 feet higher elevation than Tucson, so I get cactus flowers in April and May. Saguaro National Park East is 15 minutes away from me. So I have lots to look forward to. Janet 💕
