Description
The teddy bear cholla (Cylindropuntia bigelovii), is named for its soft, furry "cuddly" appearance from a distance, as the stems have a dense cover of spines (as seen here), so you would not want to snuggle with. Like its cousin the jumping cholla, the stems detach easily.
Fallen stem segments litter the ground under the plants, making the teddy bear cactus especially hazardous to approach. As I can attest to, entering at my own risk, to take these shots. I guess this bloom feels quite safe, "In The Arms Of A Teddy Bear."
The flowers are a unique and unusual color of lime green to whitish green, with red to lavender-streaked petals.
Southern Arizona's Saguaro National Park (both East and West), USA, has these in abundance. They only bloom in the months of May and June, so I love the opportunity to capture these beauties of the Sonoran Desert.

Great find! L/f
Janet Marie replied:
As I was saying to Denise it truly is a great find. A unique flower as well, being a whiteish green.

Wonderful find! L/F
Janet Marie replied:
It truly is Denise, as I have missed out on catching them blooming in 2020 (covid) and 2021. This was 2019. Add to that, they are not that accessible. A bit of a hazard without the long lens.

Love the red tips on this beautiful blossom. It really sets off the image so nicely. The detail here is exquisite. It always amazes me how such a lovely blossom can manage to stay so perfect in the middle of that mass of thorns. These are truly remarkable cactus. Love this! L/F Featured in American Desert Southwest, my artBUDette!! I'm glad this teddy bear kept you safe from harm!
Janet Marie replied:
Jane dear! Yay! This image finally has somebody commenting on it. Two of my favorite people, too! Photographing these teddy bear cholla cactus at Saguaro National Park is not an easy task. Their stems have fallen all over the ground and they are very difficult to approach because of that. So I have to use my 300 mm lens in order to get this kind of shot. Or or get filled with these dense thorny stems that jump right on you. And you cannot get them off without using tongs. Or if there is a stick nearby that can help. A HUGe thank you for the HOMEPAGE FEATURE in your Art Group, “AMERICAN DESERT SOUTHWEST!” Always an honor to have my photography recognized in the special way. I am so glad that you love this and you have also chosen it as one of your favorites. This teddy bear definitely would not keep me safe from harm, in fact just the opposite. But this unique flower that blooms on this in the spring is in the arms and protection of this teddy bear cholla. 💕artBUDette Janet

What a nice capture! They do look fuzzy from afar. The single bloom is a great addition. Featured in Arizona!
