Description
My "Spring Has Sprung" series. In our Arizona Sonoran Desert, this Tulip Prickly Pear Cactus only blooms in the springtime. There are more than a dozen varieties of prickly pear cactus.
This capture was right in my own desert paradise. This variety of prickly pear has LONG spines, and the flower is yellow, with a red/pink interior. Giving the look on the outside, of an orange glow, as it is "Just Basking In The Sun!"
I have honed in on how the blooms sit atop the green paddles (really the leaves of the plant), exquisite beauty among thorns.

Prickly pear flowers are so pretty when you let the sun shine through! Incidentally, there are 150 synonyms for prickly pear, so far more than a dozen varieties. Prickly pear grows around the world. The Hebrew word "sabra" refers to this species. A Jew born in Israel is known as a "sabra".
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Pat, for stopping by my gallery, and sharing your thoughts. I love to photograph the petals of all types of flowers with the sun shining through. The prickly pear cactus varieties are especially lovely. An interesting fact: "Like most true cactus species, prickly pears are native only to the Americas. Prickly pears were imported into Palestine in the 18th century for use as a natural agricultural fence surrounding animal enclosures by Bedouin. No Opuntia cacti were known anywhere in the Old World until after the introduction from America. Through human action, they have since been introduced to many other areas of the world." Because of this, in many parts of the world they are considered invasive plants.

The tiny little thorns can be very stealthy at finding their with way into your hand, Janet. They just seem to get there by flying off the cactus. Tweezers then come in handy. Worth it though, no pain no gain, in getting this beautiful shots!.... Fav / like
Janet Marie replied:
Yes the glochids can be deceiving, but these long thorns that stick out on the Tulip Prickly Pear, compared to the Englemann variety which grow straight down, keep one at bay. These two cactus are growing side by side. Giving a variety in the cactus flowers. I received no stickers with this one, but have gotten them with others. I appreciate your interest and encouragement with my artwork, and for choosing this as one of your favorites too! 💕💕💕💕
