Description
The hedgehog cactus has earned its name, because its short, spiny stems resemble hedgehogs. The most common hedgehog-cactus varieties have intense magenta flowers, although the flowers may also appear in shades of pink, purple and lavender. The blossoms last for five days, opening in the morning and closing at night.
I have about 10 hedgehog cactus groups, of various varieties. I was patiently waiting the arrival of all the buds to bloom forth. They don't all open at one time, which means sharing its luscious color for weeks.
This variety of Hedgehog, graces my backyard desert landscape, looking as though it is dead. And yet, it produced this lovely strawberry colored bloom, looking "Lighter Than Air" atop this cactus.
