When the Arizona Upland Region (Tucson being its largest city) of the Sonoran Desert has a very wet winter. This makes our springtime, one of glorious joy, with all the flowering plants bursting forth on the scene.
My home sits on an acre of natural desert landscape. Which includes as you see here, the Staghorn Cholla Cactus (Cylindropuntia thurberi versicolor). Looking especially glorious with their delightfully vibrant blossoms.
This cactus readily hybridizes with other Chollas, making it quite variable in appearance. Something I feel has happened with my various Chollas. So I try to give them their proper names based on various factors researched.
The latin name for staghorn cholla (versicolor) reflects the wide range of colors of its long-lasting flowers; that can be red, yellow, purple or intermediate shades. They are found over a small area of Southern Arizona, centered on Tucson. So I feel quite privileged to be able to enjoy the beauty of these delightful desert flora.
I like the way the stem sticks way out from the base of the cactus, as though suspended in midair. With these beautiful blooms hanging on the end of them, you wonder what keeps them there.
You know, a neat little fact about a cactus, "all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti," many succulents are mistakenly referred to as a cactus (such ocotillo, agave, aloe vera and yuccas). In order for a succulent plant to be considered a cactus, the plant must have areoles. Areoles are small, round, cushion-like mounds of flesh where spines, hair, leaves, flowers, and more grow from the cactus.
