Description
On the outskirts of Tucson, Arizona (USA), a small but vital part of the Sonoran Desert is preserved as the Saguaro National Park (East-Rincon Mountain District) It's one of 3 national parks in Arizona.
The teddy bear cholla (Cylindropuntia bigelovii), is named for its soft, furry "cuddly" appearance from a distance, as the stems are completely covered with spines. But as you can see it's "Not So Cuddly Teddy Bear!" Like its cousin the jumping cholla, the stems detach easily.
Fallen stem segments litter the ground under the plants, making the teddy bear cactus especially hazardous to approach. As I can attest to, entering at my own risk, to take these shots. If I want to view the teddy bear cholla cactus, this is the nearest place, and abundantly so.

Now I know what the cacti I had many years ago are called. Lovely shot!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Kathryn for stopping by and sharing your thoughts about this rare cactus. I really appreciate it. The Teddy Bear Cholla cactus only grow in the wild, in the Sonoran Desert (which has 7 regions to that desert) region of Arizona, northern Mexico, and Southeastern California. Some botanical gardens may have them. So if you had these many years ago, you must have at one time lived in this area of the United States or Northern Mexico. This was photographed at the Saguaro National Park-Rincon Mountain District.

Revisiting this great shot of this Teddy Bear Cholla Cactus. I love the saguaro cactus and other desert flora laden background to this thorny close-up. When viewed at a distance, they do indeed have a furry, cuddly look to them, but taking a closer look says otherwise. One of the many delights to view at a distance, here at Arizona's Saguaro National Park. It's the stems that have fallen on the ground, that is what will get you, as they attach themselves to your leg or shoe. They can only be removed with a stick or tongs. a HUGe favorite, and sharing on Facebook!

Ohh yeah, looks so cuddly but it's a mean one to human. But a very beautiful image Janet FL
Janet Marie replied:
Christiane! Thank you for stopping by my gallery to share your lovely thoughts about this. You definitely canโt get too close, but where you step is more critical as these stems litter the ground. When they attach you need a stick to remove. I have gotten them in my shoes, even in my skin. I appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites too. Janet ๐

Lovely capture of this hazardous beauty! LF
Janet Marie replied:
Hazardous is the best word to describe a teddy bear cholla cactus. As their stems are all over the ground and they just jump on you and stick to your shoe or your leg they are quite dangerous. But I find there look quite fascinating. I am glad that you like this and have chosen it is one of your favorites too. Janet ๐
