Description
This hedgehog cactus has earned its name because its short, spiny stems resemble hedgehogs. The most common hedgehog-cactus varieties have intense magenta flowers, although the flowers may also appear in shades of pink, purple and lavender. The blossoms last for five days, opening in the morning and closing at night.
I have been patiently waiting, for all my hedgehog cacti to bloom. Alas' near day's end, one bloom appeared in our front yard. "Good things come to those who wait!" This group of hedgehog is sheltered by a nurse plant, a creosote bush. Not easy getting in their with my camera, at the same time trying to keep from falling into other cactus surrounding me. As you can see, this pink flower is "One Bloom Of Many More!"

We know spring in the Sonoran Desert is officially here when we see the first glowing magenta hedge hog blossoms, Janet. So nice to our very first in our desert garden this spring of 2018! Brava, dear lady!.....Fav / Like
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you dear Jerry for visiting my gallery and sharing your ever encouraging, inspiring thoughts about my artwork. This of course was the first bloom of all the hedgehog cactus in our Sonoran Desert paradise. I look forward to sharing the different captures of these delicate beauties, before the desert cottontail bunnies ate some. I appreciate the brava and for choosing this as one of your favorites too. đź’•đź’•đź’•đź’•

Nope--not gonna reach down and try to pick this one OUCH! ! Great work.FAV
Janet Marie replied:
Reynold! So marvelous of you to stop by and share your thoughts about my artwork. I have some beautiful shots to share of these magenta beauties. I have been anticipating their arrival. This being the first arrival of many. The petals are soft and delicate. But are nestled and hugged by the deceptive thorns. So it’s definitely a look but don’t touch moment. Thank you for feeling it’s great work. I am humbled and appreciative of the support. I also appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites. 💕Janet

:-) I like this hedgehog Janet Marie, it is pretty but don't think I'd be picking blooms from this baby. :-)) It is so lovely. L/F/P
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much Debra for visiting my gallery and sharing your lovely thoughts about my artwork. No cactus blooms are not meant to be picked, but just enjoyed. I had been waiting for them to bloom, having about 8 in my desert acre. I will be sharing some of their beauty soon. After days of them coming out, just yesterday, naughty desert cottontail ate the petals, ruining the lovely bouquet. I am happy that I was able to capture them before this happened. I am glad you like this and feel it's lovely. I also appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites, and sharing on pinterest. đź’•Janet
