Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are popular potted plants, particularly during December. A Poinsettia shares with us, such a vibrant mood, with its flaming red colored blooms.
Much is written about the poinsettia, much of which can be searched on the web. I will just share this one tidbit, it gets its common English name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the US in 1825.
These brightly red petals of Poinsettias, which look like flowers, are actually the bunch of upper leaves of the plant, called bracts. Poinsettia flowers are small, green or yellow, and grow inconspicuously in the center of each leaf bunch, as seen here.
I was surprised to see them growing outside here in Tubac, Arizona. They were adorning the garden of a nearby art gallery. Giving such a splendid display, they were a spectacle or pageantry, if you will. Showing off its "Poinsettia Pomp," that I just had to capture.
