Description
Southern Arizona once again gets snow. The 2019 "La Fiesta de los Vaqueros® - Tucson Rodeo" is happening today through Sunday. I have never known it to deal with snow. Rain yes, but not snow. So all the rodeo acts, may be performing with a bit of a disadvantage.
Just on the outskirts of Tucson, Arizona, at 3500 ft. elevation, we may be getting more than in town. I was just thinking about looking forward to Spring and all the wildflowers (those beginning in late February). But the last week in February, temperatures are expected to be in the middle 70's F or middle 20's C.
I woke up to my desert garden of joy covered in snow. Five and a half hours later, it was still snowing. This Santa Rita Prickly Pear Cactus or Purple Prickly Pear, is my favorite cactus in my Sonoran Desert garden of joy. Here it is enduring as a "Prickly Pear Knee Deep In Snow!" A purplelicious snow day delight!

I love how they turn purple when it gets cold. Fabulous capture.
Janet Marie replied:
This prickly pear actually is purple all the time. It is a Santa Rita or Purple Prickly Pear Cactus. My Tulip Prickly Pear or the Engelmann Prickly are always green. I do have some that get reddish and some purple color to them (but never flowers, perhaps not mature enough), and they have really long spines. The Santa Rita has no spines, just dotted with aureole glochids (sharp micro-spines). I have captured them even more purple than this. Thank you Bunny for stopping by my gallery to share your wonderful comment. I am glad you like it and have chosen it as one of your favorites. I really appreciate that! Janet💕

Wonderful. Never saw them in snow before.
Janet Marie replied:
Our elevation here in the Sonoran Desert is 3500 feet. We received snow in January, and in February, 6.5 inches of snow that day in 2019. Nothing in 2020. Thank you stopping by and sharing your wonderful comment. I really appreciate it! Janet💕

Santa Rita Prickly Pear are the most interesting of all varieties! I love the purple tones they have. This photo is just awesome with the snow around it, Janet! L/F
Janet Marie replied:
Marilyn! Aren’t you just the sweetest thing to share such a lovely comment about this piece. They definitely are a favorite of mine. Of course purple is my favorite color so that’s kind of the reason as well. And they produce such beautiful flowers reminding me of roses which are also my favorite flowers. I’m glad that you like this and feel that it’s awesome. I appreciate knowing that and that you have chosen this as one of your favorites too.
Jerry Bokowski
Congratulations, Janet, for the Homepage Feature in Beauty Of Arizona!. Well deserved, as this is such a rare sight in the Sonoran Desert. Aptly titled too, as these Santa Rita Prickly Pear cactus certainly are "knee deep in snow." Beautiful! like/fave/Facebook
