This is a Tulip Prickly Pear Cactus. In our Arizona Sonoran Desert, this Tulip Prickly Pear Cactus only blooms in the springtime. There are more than a dozen varieties of prickly pear cactus.
My home sits on a desert acre, a virtual garden of joy. What a delightful, overlapping of yellow petals when fully opened. Exposing the reddish-pink interior. This variety of prickly pear has LONG, wicked looking spines. I am on "pins and needles" waiting for them to bloom, but you could say, that prickly pear cactus bloom is literally sitting on pins and needles.

Oh my gosh...this is just beautiful. What most think is just plain hot desert, should stop and just look at the amazing beauty of the desert! FLTw
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much Debby for your lovely comment about my tulip prickly pear cactus bloom. Arizona is the only state to have all 4 deserts of the U.S. grace it borders. The mojave desert is a very hot desert, but the Sonoran Desert is a very lush desert, and is home to a very diversified selection of cactus flowers in spring and summer. And you are so right about them being beautiful and persons having an incorrect view of being barren and hot. I really appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites and sharing on Twitter.

I know how much you enjoy photographing the the prickly pear cactus blooms every spring. It does have that "look but don't touch" feel to it for sure. Wicked thorns indeed. Beauty among the thorns. A great shot! like/fave/Facebook

Wow, Jerry! You are so right that I do enjoy capturing their unique beauty and the adventure in doing so. Thank you for your wonderful comment and sharing this on Facebook.

Gorgeous cactus flower.
Janet Marie replied:
Tulip prickly pear cactus flowers certainly are as you expressed. They bring joy and beauty to Arizona Sonoran Desert every spring. They are an adventure to photograph, between the thorns, glochids, and the native “cactus bees”. But oh so worth it. Thank you for stopping by and supporting my work. I really appreciate it!

A beautiful bloom, indeed! L/fav
Janet Marie replied:
Nancy! Thank you for taking the time to visit my collection of work, and to express such lovely words about my photography. I really appreciate that and the fave! I have 3 varieties of prickly pear cactus that bloom, each flower looking different. This is a tulip prickly pear, I have a purple cactus called the Santa Rita Prickly Pear, and then the Engelmann Prickly Pear. Other prickly pear cactus I have growing do not produce any flowers. They may not be mature enough. Janetđź’•

Janet Marie replied:
Oh, and to reply to what you mentioned, in order for the cactus to reproduce new stems, flowers are needed to attract the pollinators. Probably mostly done by the native Cactus Bee or humming birds. In order for these pollinators to want to approach this plant, they have to be showy and beautiful. Ah, the wisdom of the Creator, and this assured process on continuation of the plant, we get the added bonus of these beautiful blooms. What love and generosity for this MARVELoUS gift!
