Description
Purple, prickly, and beautiful, perfectly describes the Santa Rita Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia violaceae var. santa rita), also called purple prickly pear, after the Santa Rita Mountain range. The color contrast of their blue-grey pads and the shades of purple are so striking in my desert acre of joy.
Purple is my passion color and my favorite, hence why the Arizona Purple Prickly Pear Cactus is my favorite cactus.
In springtime, the Arizona Sonoran Desert becomes a virtual smorgasbord of blooms. Oh how yellow complements the color purple. These perfectly placed, prickly pear cactus blooms, atop this stem or pad, are a triplicity treat.

Debby Pueschel
This is a beautiful flower Janet Marie! FL
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Debby for your lovely comment. The Santa Rita prickly pear cactus flowers are a beautiful, lemony color, with purple paddles. They were looking quite wonderful from this perspective. Showing off not only the purple cactus stems, but the flowers as well. The flowers last a few days, dry up, and the fruit is left behind. Something that happens with all cactus. They are a favorite for javelinas to munch.

Beautifully captured Janet! L/F/C/Tw The Prickly Pear is also a native plant in Sicily. It has that kind of climate with temps that are over 100 even in November!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Lorraine for your lovely words expressed about the Santa Rita prickly pear cactus. I really appreciate it. Prickly pear cactus, Opuntia, have 150 varieties in the United States and Ontario. These are native to Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The prickly pear in Sicily is not native there, but have been imported from Mexico, Central and South America.
