Description
What's yellow, green, and simply glorious during Springtime, in my Arizona Sonoran Desert. Why none other than the Palo Verde Tree! I am especially fond of trees, and wood marvels.
The name is Spanish and means "green stick." The bark of a palo verde tree is green because it's filled with chlorophyll. It's the Arizona State Tree! Designated as such in 1954. Arizona hosts two native species, the Foothills Palo Verde and the Blue Palo Verde, living to be 100 years, even up to 400 years old. Growing 20 to 30 feet tall.
This is an example of how large they can get. As they age the trunk and bark of the tree changes to dark, rustic wood color. As I take my walks or drive from my home, I pass this tree. It is especially noticeable due to it's explosion of yellow blossoms. Bursting forth in our glorious springtime, giving the Sonoran Desert our gold, rather than in the fall. What can one say about this tree, that it is one "Prodigious Palo Verde Tree!" A real standout against the vivid blue sky.
