Description
For those that know me well, are very well aware, how much I LOVE butterflies. My Arizona home is situated on an acre of natural vegetation, in my unique Sonoran Desert environment. So I do see butterflies fluttering all over the place, only landing very briefly, though. Very seldom giving me an opportunity to photograph them.
So when I have the unbelievably, rare opportunity to do so, I am ecstatic! This September day, I was "Queen For A Day," as was this Queen butterfly (Danaus gilipus), making its photo debut, unknowingly.
There were several flying about some of my Creosote bushes, landing on newly bloomed flowers, from a recent rain. I was quite surprised at their interest in these tiny blossoms. I thought for sure at seeing my presence, they would leave, but surprisingly they truly were enamoured with these flowers. At first I couldn't a shot, as they were constantly on the move. After a while they seemed to calm down at my presence, and still with great difficulty, I was able to photograph them. I had to use my 300mm lens, as they were landing way above my head.
The Queen Butterfly is a smaller, darker relative of the Monarch Butterfly. Unlike the monarch, queens do not migrate. In the Sonoran Desert it is a permanent resident. It likes open, sunny areas, living off of nectar from flowers including milkweeds, and they can be brown or orange in color.
There is a lot of interesting reading about these beautiful butterflies, for those whose interest may be peaked.

I am absolutely in love with butterflies myself, and yes, so often quite difficult to capture! This is quite a fantastic photo, and monarchs are usually our most faithful visitors each summer. I am missing them already. Your gallery is amazing!!
Janet Marie replied:
Sharon! Thank you for stopping by my gallery to share wonderful comment about my photography. I really appreciate it! This butterfly is a queen butterfly, although they do look similar to a monarch with wings closed, but completely different with spread wings. This queen was a bit more cooperative than some of my attempts to photograph butterflies. They tend to be a flutterby for me.
Linda Brittain
Beautiful capture!
Janet Marie replied:
Linda! One of those rare moments for me to be able to photograph a beautiful butterfly. Especially one that I have ever had the pleasure to do so. Hence, why I and the queen butterfly, were "Queen For a Day"! Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate it!

The light if particularly lovely on this beauty, Janet Marie. Fine depth of field for showing off the queen, too.
Janet Marie replied:
Nikolyn! Thank you for your lovely thoughts shared about this. It was an amazing day for me and this queen butterfly, fluttering about and yet allowing me to capture its beauty. It took a 300mm lens to get the job done, and I was most pleased and surprised at the results. It inspired my husband to use it as a painting for one of his small works. A favorite of mine.
