Since 1933 this extraordinary giant cactus, the Saguaro, has been protected within SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK (one of 3 National Parks in Arizona).
On this glorious spring day, the desert became a showy display of color here at the Saguaro National Park Rincon Mountain District location, in Tucson, Arizona. (USA).
Javelina Rocks Overlook, is a gem tHere in the Park. Low but shapely rock formations dominate the area, often described as layer-cake formations. This area is named after its favorite inhabitant, the javelina. Other small animals also find these rocks ideal for shelter and shade.
I am fascinated by rock formations, so I like to take time for a close-up look at some of the rocks and their variety of shapes, textures and colors in the stone.
Here seen, is the saguaro cactus, and has been called monarch of the Sonoran Desert, supreme symbol of the American Southwest, and a plant with PERSONALITY. It is renowned for the variety of ODD, ALL-TOO-HUMAN shapes it assumes...shapes that inspire wild and fanciful imaginings.
Such was the case with this Saguaro Cactus, as it appears to be a "Saguaro Up Against A Wall," which is a very bad situation to be in. Or maybe it loves rocks as much as I do, and is just a "rock huggin' Saguaro." You decide.
These colorful rock formations are throughout the terrain, adding to the beauty of the landscape. The Santa Catalina Mountains loom in the background (recently have been on fire, in what has been named the "Big Horn Fire").
This is just some of the diversity in the Park, depending on which direction you are looking. When driving the scenic, one-way, 8 mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive, we can enjoy a leisurely look at the variety of Sonoran Desert life. There are lots of places to pull-off the road.

I always love you pictures,but your descriptions are truly beautiful , better than even Arizona Highways. Some argue that pictures should speak for themselves and need no comment, but I disagree. A very beautiful place the the Saguaro NP. I love the Saguaros, specially when they are in full bloom. For us it's also interesting that the fruits are harvested from different kind of birds.
