It was day of venturing to new frontiers, of places never visited in Arizona. Our first destination was to the Dragoon Mountains in the Coronado National Forest.
After visiting our initial destination, our travel back to the I-10 exit, afforded us much opportunity to view Texas Canyon from a far. A side of it I had never seen before. But I would have "rocks in my head," if I didn't take notice of all the various native wildflowers that adorn the roadways of Arizona.
This one is a favorite of mine, as I share in the next paragraph. These beautiful wildflowers are Prickly Poppy, Southwestern Prickly Poppy or Bluestem Prickle poppy (Argemone pleicantha), also called, Thistle Poppy, Chicalote, and Cowboy's Fried Egg.
The flowers are 3-5" across with delicate, wrinkled, tissue paper-like petals, and grow to 3 feet tall. From a distance, the flowers look like sunny-side up fried eggs to me, looks like someone else agrees as they are referred to, as the "Cowboy's Fried Eggs." But don't be fooled, they definitely are not edible, because all parts of the plant are poisonous and contain toxic ingredients, and covered with numerous stickery spines.

Conni! Roses, my favorite flowers are not so friendly either with all those thorns. I get stuck a lot when trying to get in close, or pruning them. Even drawing blood. Ouch!
