Description
On July 14th 2017, the Northeast Pima County, Tucson, Arizona area was hit with a TORNADO watch from The National Weather Service!!
Here is a series of photography, of the results of that storm, moving East. Unlike anything we had witnessed before. So amazing, to be able to capture all the EVER CHANGING, glorious, grandeur of this Summer Monsoon storm system at sundown!! Felt a bit like a "storm chaser!"
This capture in the series, really did "Take Me By Storm!!" The setting SUN looks like someone coming through storm with a large flashlight! UNBELIEVABLE!

Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Cindy for your wonderful comment. It was an amazing occasion for sure. I am elated for the opportunity to experience such amazing Arizona sunsets during a summer monsoon moment, of a super storm.
Nikolyn McDonald
Love the mood in this one. Rain is so welcome in the Southwest - looks as if you were able to take full advantage of the storm. Glad no tornado ever materialized, though.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Nikolyn for your wonderful comment about my monsoon sunset. This was one of my greatest days for such exciting photography. I would not do so again, as the danger wasn't imminent at the time. This particular year, 2017, was a great monsoon season, with lots of rain. The summer of 2021 set a record for having as much rain in 2 months, that we normally get all year. The Arizona Upland region of the Sonoran Desert is quite lush, and becomes very green. Home to the Saguaro Cactus as well. Their early survival depends on the nurse plants. I appreciate you stopping by.

…and it could be bone dry on the other side of the street. Why the weather is so fascinating. Neat capture, Janet. - Mike (V/F)
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Michael for liking my southeastern Arizona summer monsoon storm. It wasn’t raining where I was standing to take this picture. It was a slight drizzle. The storm was further away. I wouldn’t have my camera in the rain. The sun was going down behind the Tucson Mountain range about 24 miles west of me. I haven’t experienced that rain on one side of the street and bone dry on the other side during our summer storms. One side of town and nothing my way. These storms move pretty fast, and I tend to now head for cover. The lightening is the concern and flash flooding.
Rachel Morrison
Outrageously cool capture!
Janet Marie replied:
Rachel! Thank you for your awesome words expressed about my monsoon sunset. It was most outrageous of me to photograph this moment, but I am so glad I did. I have cherished moments like this, as I doubt I will tread these waters again. It's not recommended by the weather bureau to be out in our summer monsoon storms. But they do grace us with their dramatic atmospheric moments. Cloud and sky events are a favorite of mine.
Elizabeth Pennington
Great capture and work!! L/F
Janet Marie replied:
The great monsoon storms do make for a great capture. One just has to be standing in the right place at the right time. Although I don't plan on trying this again. It getting caught up in the moment, one forgets that lightening could be lurking overhead. Also upon arriving home my alarm was giving a Tornado watch warning. So it truly "took me by storm." Thank you Elizabeth for choosing this as a favorite for you to comment on. I really appreciate it!
Larisa Fedotova

VIVA Anderson
Compelled ! to admit my complete awe at this vision, your being there, this capture,my dear Janet.........BRAVA !.......WOW !........f.v...............VIVA
Janet Marie replied:
Oh Viva! Yes! It was quite exhilarating in fact. And look at the results. Quite surprising to say the least. I never know how well monsoon storms at sunset will translate. July 2017 was phenomenal for that. I would not have been out for this storm if it had not been at sundown. Normally I am in, safe and sound. All credit goes to the One who designed the atmospheric conditions to produce this. Of course, if you are not there, then one misses out. Thank you so much for sharing your ever so enthusiastic and marvelous feelings about this. I see it "took you by storm!" If you have time sometime, I invite you to visit my Monsoon Madness collection. After sharing my poppy's excursion, I hope to upload some more cloudscape wonders. Big hugs to you Viva, 💕Janet

Oh wow, Janet. What an absolutely splendid shot of a terrific monsoon and the faint orb of the sun glimmering through. It does not surprise me a tornado watch was associated with that one but that is quite rare for this area, no? In Wyoming, where I grew up, tornado watches were of great excitement to me, especially when I got my first car, causing my mother much angst. I was only ever able to capture the cell that produced a tornado in 2012 but never was able to capture one touching down. Stormy, violent weather is my favorite by far and I love this image. Featured in Tucson and Southern Arizona.
Janet Marie replied:
Chance, I am gobSMACKED by your aWeSoMe comment about this. This makes a great metal print too, as this was one of my sales. I threw all caution to the wind on this day, but I don't think I would again. It was my first monsoonal sunsets in 2017, as I had just joined FAA at the beginning of June. Tornado watch is rare, but strong winds and microbursts are the norm each summer. We didn't know about the tornado watch, until returning home and our Vivint alarm system was giving that warning. At which point we turned on the TV and it was on the news. I have been a bit more cautious since 2017, as that July was an phenomenal month. Thank you so much for the HOMEPAGE FEATURE in your Art Group, "TUCSON AND SOUTHERN ARIZONA!" It's an honored for my artwork to be recognized in this special way. Especially from someone who is familiar with these monsoon storms. This is just 1 mile in from I-10 off Colossal Cave Rd.
