Description
As we are making our way to the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, our personal guide is sharing much information about this historic place in Athens, Greece (continually saying we can take all the pictures we want on the way back, WRONG, he doesn't know photographers does he). But I was most interested in capturing what I could, as I really didn't know what I was truly in for. Everything you see changes with time and perspective, as with this, getting ever closer the entrance.
Not knowing what this was when I decided to photograph it, I loved the way this ancient marble structure was peeking up above the Acropolis wall. Framed by the trees was an extra bonus for me.
Come to find out, this is the "Temple of Athena Nike," the smallest structure on the Athenian Acropolis. Built to honor Athena Nike, the goddess of victory, it stood as a shrine to Athensโ patron goddess, and also acted as a symbol of Athensโ military and political strength.
It was completed around 420 B.C.E., built with Poros limestone and faced with marble. As can be seen here from this perspective, it was surrounded by a sort of guardrail or parapet that would keep Athenians, and other visitors from falling off the Acropolis.

It was a most marvelous day indeed, to view history of the past. I appreciate you being the first person to comment on this. I am delighted that you have appreciation for the perspective I decided to use. It seemed we walked forever to get to the entrance of the Acropolis. When you have never visited a place before and are not sure what awaits you, it can be overwhelming to know what to capture. Considering everything, I am pleased at what I was able to photograph. It was hot, crowded, and due to the humidity, a lot of haze in the air. The photographer has to take what they can though. I truly appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites and your words of encouragement. Thank you for that. ๐๐๐๐
