Description
My Arizona home sits on an acre of lush Sonoran Desert landscape. I have many desert fauna visit my desert acre of joy. What a hoot and surprise to see a western screech owl (Megascops kennicottii) grace me with his presence.
It was our summer monsoon, and had just stopped raining. I noticed tail feathers sticking down from a porch beam. I wondered what could this be, not looking like any of the desert birds I usually see. Upon getting a closer look, I said to myself, "it's an owl. I ran and got my camera, and was hoping it would still be there when I returned.
Upon my first meeting, I was seeing from his back, and then he turned to look at me inquisitively. I thought at that point he might get scared and fly away. He must have stopped off here to get out of the rain. I spoke with a very kind, soft voice, and he seemed to be quite curious about me. Allowing me to photograph him from all sides.
I came around to the front of him, and he turned his head in my direction. Still keeping his head cocked a little to the side, as this was 3/4 profile pose. It was most generous and courteous of him to allow me this visit. And that I was able to photograph him while perched on the beam of the underside of my porch.
I left at this point, not wanting create any undo stress for this majestic bird. A while later, I peeked around to see if he was still there, and he was not. I hope he had a safe journey, wherever he was headed.

Thank you Debby for your wonderful comment. I am delighted that you feel the way you do. It was a shock to have such a sweet creature grace my home. It seemed to be quite taken with me and curious. As I tried to photograph it from all sides, he turned and followed me. I talked to it soothingly and he allowed me to be there, for the experience of a lifetime.
