💕 A Series of the Curve-billed Thrasher's daily routine and antics can be viewed in my "Desert Birds Collection." Their story.💕
We have many Sonoran Desert dwellers, who have made our home, their home. The Arizona Sonoran Desert's Curve-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma curvirostre) is common in our desert garden of joy. It's said to generally reside where cholla and saguaro cacti, ocotillo, mesquite and palo verde trees, and creosote bushes are prevalent. They seem to love to make their nests in the Jumping Cholla Cactus around my home.
"Spring Has Sprung" once again, after a fairly wet winter. Curve-billed Thrashers have decided to build their nest in a Jumping Cholla or Chain Fruit Cholla cactus. This time it is a cholla cactus right next door to a previously used cholla cactus. I guess you could call that "flipping houses" in the bird world (it seems they came up with the idea first).
I enjoy their comical antics, watching them in action. I saw this one hopping along the ground of my desert garden of joy, collecting tiny twigs and other paraphernalia. So I decided to watch where it was going with these items. Voila, there it was. It was moving all around inside, and I carefully approached. Out it hopped, as though it knew it had an audience. Once again, amazing me, that its birdie feet were able to traverse this spiny menace. It has gathered a longer than needed, acacia's thorny twig, sticking out beyond the nest.
"Treading Lightly" is the game plan. Not only for the stickery foundation, but the Jumping Cholla or Chain Fruit, stems drop off to the ground below.
The Curve-billed Thrasher that lives in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and northwestern Mexico looks different than the form that lives in the Chihuahuan Desert of Texas and central Mexico, and they may be separate species.

They due tend to have that less than pleased look. The thrashers always have that grumpy, stern expression on their faces, when looking straight on.
