Description
One of the most amazing of the many unique and unusual plants found, and native in my Arizona Sonoran Desert, is the ocotillo. Their name in Spanish means, "Little Torch," named after the cluster of fiery red flowers you can find at the end of their stems from about March to June. They are not a cactus, but a shrub. I have many growing in my desert garden of joy. This is a close-up of one of the many long cane-like unbranched spiny stems that grow from a short trunk.
During the dry season, the ocotillo is a bundle of gray, thorny stems, looking drab, like a dead stick. But, when our summer monsoon season arrives bringing warmth and rain, miraculously and seemingly overnight, the ocotillo has quite a transformation as it sprouts leafy green leaves. You might say it's "Turning Over A New Leaf!"
But when the monsoon rains subside in September, the ocotillo sheds its leaves and returns to its state of suspended animation, to wait out the dry months until summer's warm rains return.

This is just a different view of this wonderful plant. FLTw
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Debbie for sharing your wonderful thoughts about this. Normally the Ocotillo looks like just a dead stick. And when the rains come they just leaf out practically out of nowhere. Amazing. I really wanted to hone in on the intricacy as to what a work of art they are. I especially enjoy the vibrant red-orange flowers that form on the tips of them during the spring time. I am glad you like it and have chosen it as one of your favorites. I really appreciate that and for sharing it on Twitter too. Janet đź’•

I love when our ocotillos turn green with the summer rains, Janet. This closeup really shows their unique beauty....fav / like
Janet Marie replied:
Sometimes when you have ideas on how you want to capture something, at times they just work. It’s amazing how something that looks like a dead stick, seemingly overnight, leafs out so beautifully. The lighting was just right for when I wanted to accomplish. I really appreciate you noticing all that you expressed. Thank you for liking this in choosing it is one of your favorites. 💕💕💕💕

The ocotillo! So new and exotic to me (far away in Finland) Wonderful capture and composition! LF
Janet Marie replied:
Johanna! So excited by your visit and curiosity about this marvelous plant, native to the Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert in Southwestern United States. I live in the most eastern part of the Sonoran Desert in Southeastern Arizona. So it would be new to you unless you’ve had the pleasure to visit here or viewed them in pictures. They are gorgeous at a distance, looking lushly green. But up close, gives a different perspective of their uniqueness. Thank you for visiting and sharing such a marvelous comment, that made my day. I am delighted that you like it and have chosen it as one of your favorites too! 💕Janet

Stunning! I love the colors in this -- that is such a luscious shade of lavender. You REALLY need to submit this to American Desert Southwest... just sayin'.. LOL L/F
Janet Marie replied:
Wow Jane! I’m gobSMACKED! What an aWeSoMe comment about my artwork. I seriously thought about submitting it to your group, but didn’t try to submit to any group when first posting it. I am amazed at how certain times of day it creates such wonderful lighting, and colors. I have no photography enhancement programs. I am pure photography. Sometimes I feel inadequate compared to some who do such artsy creativity with their photos. You are a person of detail to have noticed why I like this so much, and wanted to post it. But I think too much about whether others will like it. I am elated that you get this, and feel it’s stunning! Feelings I hoped to evoke. Thank you so much for your encouragement and inspiration. I have taken your advice and submitted this to your group. I appreciate also that you have chosen this as one of your favorites! Big hugs, Janet 💕
