Description
Driving along 42 Forest Road, to the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon, part of the Coronado National Forest Recreation Area, in Portal, Arizona, taking in all the beauty before me.
The soaring cliffs, pocked with caves and punctuated with pinnacles, come into view well before you arrive. As I was riding along, I just had to stop, and take in this amazing view, which included these gorgeous queen butterflies (Danaus gilippus).
It was most enamored with this rubber rabbitbrush shrub (Ericameria nauseosa), full of yellow flowers. It gets its name due to the smell given off when the flowers are crushed, described as pineapple-like by some, and foul and rubbery by others. I wonder which smell was given off for this queen butterfly, as well as the painted lady butterfly, clouded sulfur butterfly, ladybugs and other small unknown bugs.
They all probably didn't care as it was November, and summer flowers were gone, making these vivid yellow blooms quite attractive.
By the way, I am quite nutty for butterflies (I refer to them as flutterby, as they don't stay put for long, mostly flutter by me), and I wasn't disappointed when this queen decided to spread its wings.

Sharon, wow! A most excellent comment. Thank you for your continued support of my work. I really appreciate it! Fall is a great time to see butterflies here in southeastern Arizona. All the best on your kitties adoption. They couldn’t be in a better home. Enjoy your week. I apologize for not replying sooner. My life is no longer my own at the present. Catching up a little myself.

Janet this is WOW ... this is really exquisite. The perfect dof, the perfect detail on your wonderful butterfly ... all the colors against the dark background are just stunning!!! f t p
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Lois, for your wonderful comment. I delighted that you like my butterfly photography. While visiting Cave Creek Canyon Recreational Area, I was expecting to see any wildflowers or butterflies. So a fabulous surprise. I love shallow depth of field photography, choosing the natural background of the blurred rabbitbrush blooms. The dark shadow is natural as well. I appreciate you noticing all the details, and sharing on Twitter and Pinterest.
