It has been an unseasonably warm winter in Arizona's Sonoran Desert. January saw temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal. We were in for a much needed rain, and in the middle of January that rain came.
I have been following, and capturing in my desert garden, Purple Prickly Pear Cactus or Santa Rita Cactus (my favorite, named for Arizona's Santa Rita Mountains), that has heART! I like that they produce FINE spines (I have many cactus with long, wicked spines), called glochids. It has been getting more and more purple these days, as you can see. Accumulating rain droplets on some of the edges. Purple is my passion color, and I love the little heart. I couldn't help but think of the song "Purple Rain" by Prince. So I just had to capture this moment, "My Purple Rain!!" It is so purplelicious, wouldn't you say!
I am looking forward to Springtime, when it will bloom lovely lemon-yellow flowers. What a sight that will be.

Lucia Waterson
Amazing, I never knew about this purple cactus. It's truly beautiful, Janet Marie!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Lucia for your lovely comment. So many who view the Santa Rita Prickly Pear Cactus, are amazed by that. It's depth of purpleness, is dependent on the weather. Looking more purple during the colder months. Purple is my passion color, so these are truly beautiful to me as well. Just wait until they get flowers every spring. I invite you to check out my photography of them in bloom.
Jeff Burgess
What a seriously beautiful cactus color. For real? Regardless, I love it.
Janet Marie replied:
The color, real for sure. Santa Rita Prickly Pear cactus or Purple Prickly Pear cactus. They produce lemony yellow flowers every spring. This is located in my very own Sonoran Desert acre. It has brought me much joy and the color varies according to the temperature and time of year. Thank you Jeff for visiting my gallery of work and loving it. I really appreciate it!
Conni Schaftenaar
I never knew that cactus would turn purple - this is fabulous, Janet Marie! L/F
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Conni for stopping by my gallery and choosing this as one of your favorites. I really appreciate that. This is a purple prickly pear cactus, also called the Santa Rita prickly pear cactus. It is always purple. Depending on the temperature it can get darker, and shows a bit of bluish green. My tulip prickly pear and Englemann prickly pear are always green. I have some other prickly pear that get a reddish cast to them in the winter time. Due to the excessive heat right now, my varieties of prickly pear on my natural desert acre, are looking a bit stressed. This is my favorite cactus on my property. I have one in the front of my place, but this is my favorite.

Wonderful for a close up, but not too close. Love the lavender.
Janet Marie replied:
Lyman! Thank you so much for stopping by my gallery to share such a wonderful comment about my photography. I really appreciate it. They do not have the same thorns as other prickly pear cactus, but when I get in close to photograph the flowers, the glochids and areole are worse than the thorns.

Janet, the desert has always been the most special of all places for me. This violet color opuntia is magnificent. I cannot imagine walking upon one as in this image. What a great joy your whole gallery is. This purple prickly pear makes the day. F/L/TW.
Janet Marie replied:
Randy! Thank you so very much for stopping by my gallery and leaving such a wonderful comment. I am delighted to know that you found my gallery of great joy for you, and made your day. I have two of these purple prickly pear cactus on my desert acre. A sight I get to enjoy on a daily basis. The Sonoran Desert is a special desert, especially if you live in the Arizona Upland region (1 of 7 regions). It’s a very lush and green desert, especially during our rainy season. I appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites and sharing it on Twitter. Janet 💕

Purple Prickly Pear Cactus is so beautiful and interesting, I have never seen one for real, this is an beautiful photograph! Fav
Janet Marie replied:
Nancy! How lovely of you to visit my gallery and share your thoughts about my artwork. Purple is my passion color and this one has a heart-shaped paddle (2 actually). This sits right there in view from my backyard, and brings me great pleasure. I am hoping to see some cactus flowers from this one and I have one in the front yard. I live on an acre of desert with so much Sonoran Desert Native plants and trees. This spring has been a burst of delight. This was taken in January during a much needed rain. We had a very dry winter, despite that my desert garden of joy is blooming. I am glad you like it and feel it's beautiful. I also appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites. đź’•Janet

Yes Jeff. The Santa Rita Prickly Pear. Cold weather and lack of water, it can get more purple. The Engelman Prickly Pear we have stays green. We have various varieties in our desert acre.
