💕 Come visit more of my bird photography, in my gallery "Desert Birds" 💕
With a home situated on a natural desert acre of native desert flora, you are bound to attract many visitors. The Arizona Sonoran Desert has a diverse selection of desert flora and desert fauna. Something for everyone.
I love the colorful beauty of the hooded oriole, but they are extremely difficult to photograph. They are very jittery birds, and fly away at the slightest movement, into nearby vegetation.
I was quite fortunate this time, as this male oriole flew to the top of this ocotillo plant, that was adorned with late summer flowers. The leaves are turning yellow, soon to drop off.
It was a beautiful time of the day, golden hour, which produces such lovely lighting. A rare moment indeed, as they generally fly for cover.

Marty Fancy
This is such a lovely capture, well done!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much, Marty for your wonderful comment. It wasn't easy as the hooded oriole doesn't stay still for long. It must have felt safe , way at the top of this tall ocotillo plant. I was glad to be standing in the right place at the right time.
Kate Brown
Gorgeous capture, wonderful color and detail! LF
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Kate. Golden hour can be a great time to get the camera, and accounts for the wonderful color and detail. The hooded oriole who visits my natural Sonoran Desert acre of joy, is quite difficult to capture. He and the female take off at the slightest movement. Apparently he felt safe taking refuge at the top of this ocotillo. I appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites, too.
Conni Schaftenaar
this is a gorgeous capture, Janet! F
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much Conni! A spectacular time of day and a willing subject, gives you gorgeous photography. I appreciate your visit and the fave too.
Johanna Zettler
Great shot.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Johanna. It really was, as this bird flies away at any movement. I guess it felt safe at the top of this very tall ocotillo plant. The lighting was unique as well, golden hour. I was most fortunate to pull off these shots.
Marcia Colelli
Very lovely capture of this beautiful bird. L
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you, Marcia! The hooded oriole is a beautiful bird indeed, and golden hour is such a lovely time of day for such a piece.
Cindy Treger
Janet, great shot. l
Janet Marie replied:
Cindy! Thank you for stopping by. The hooded oriole is most difficult to photograph, as they always fly away. I am most pleased to have taken notice of him during the golden hour. Flying high to the top of this ocotillo plant, he felt safe.
Nikolyn McDonald
The cactus flower and bird's colors certainly do work well together here - the beautiful blue of a Southwestern sky makes a great background, too.
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much Nikolyn for sharing your thoughts about my bird photography. I really appreciate it. It was a very moody and rare moment to capture the hooded oriole in this way. The plant it has to the top of, is an ocotillo which is not a cactus, but rather a shrub or plant. He has landed at the top of one of its branches, normally looking a dead stick. They bloom in spring and once again during the summer monsoon. Being October 1st, it was the end of the season, and this bird was taking advantage of those blooms. The male and the female like to rob our hummingbird feeder as well.

Thank you, Rick! I really appreciate the wow, and the fave. I am pleased that could actually get some shots of this moment, as the hooded oriole rarely stays put long enough to get the shot.

Your desert Birds collection is wonderful. Some of us never get out much to see many of these beauties. You've captured them magnificently.
Janet Marie replied:
Mary! How sweet of you to check out my bird collection and share your beautiful thoughts about it. When you live on an acre of natural Sonoran Desert flora, the birds just love to grace me with their presence. The hooded oriole is just one of those birds, but this is a rare moment. The slightest movement, and they are gone. They like to rob my hummingbird feeder. Thank you for your kind words expressed about this. I really appreciate it!

Wonderful capture; a new bird for me! l/f
Janet Marie replied:
Dorothy! Thank you for visiting my gallery and sharing your wonderful comment about my photography. I really appreciate it! I can see why it would be a new bird for you, as they exist in a small area of the southwest, Arizona being a large area where they live.
Cindy Treger
Janet, great shot of this beautiful oriole. f/l
Janet Marie replied:
Cindy! Thank you for visiting my gallery and sharing your wonderful comment about this piece. They are very elusive birds, flying away at the slightest movement. It was golden hour, and it probably thought flying to the top of this tall ocotillo, he would not be seen. The ocotillo blooms were just to good to pass up, so it stayed a while. I appreciate the fave too!
Bunny Clarke
