I was out capturing some beautiful clouds, standing in the middle of the street. Low and behold, I noticed all these butterflies flying and landing all over this Zinnias Lantana, in front of my Arizona home.
Since I am a butterfly nut, crazy for butterflies, I turned my attention to attempt to photograph these lovely creatures. I say attempt, because they would not stay still, and they we're NOT having it... being photographed. I knew I would not be able to get up close and personal. So I decided to use my telephoto lens to zoom in on them.
This reminded me of the expression, "spread your wings", or to start to do new or more interesting things. Something that not only this Painted Lady Butterfly is doing, but the lady Janet is doing as well. A dedication to myself, the butterfly lady, and to all my dear lady fellow artists who can say, "This Lady Spreads Her Wings!"

Exceptionally beautiful photograph of my favorite Arizona butterfly! I suppose most people don't think of using a telephoto lens for macro photography, but I do it frequently.

The only way for me to photograph a butterfly, is to use a long lens, as they have very good vision. Any movement, and they flutter away. This was not an easy photo shoot, due to what I described. Thank you for sharing your wonderful comment about my work. I really appreciate it!

Beautiful image Janet; and I can totally relate to your story. I could never photograph butterflies or birds. By the time you spot them, they fly away again. I tell you.... so many times, I see a beautiful bird or a butterfly, and they are standing still, I say to myself "this is it". By the time I change the settings on my camera, they are gone!!! I could never win with these guys. So kudos for you for capturing this beauty with such elegance and precision. Well done.

Hany! What a nice surprise to have you visit my gallery and share your wonderful comment about my artwork. I was only able to capture these painted ladies using my zoom lens. There were so many of them, it gave me more chances to pull it off. I hesitate to have garden flowers or ground cover due to the killer bees. When the bees are present, the butterflies are not. I hope to capture some butterfly images when my Texas Laurel will be filled purple blooms. The secret is having plants that attract them, and keep them there and distracted. This Lantana was just that. It was a challenge but so much fun, then good results. Sometimes it just works. I appreciate your vote of confidence in me and the compliment. Thank you for that!

This image was taken in the fall during migration. There were lots of painted ladies, 1 monarch, and one gulf fritillary. I saw no butterflies this past fall in this area. I was able to photograph a very small butterfly at Saguaro National Park. I have great respect for those who photograph my favorites, knowing it’s not the easiest thing to do. I also appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites. That means a lot. Janet 💕
