Description
Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World and its vastness humbles the artist and photographer. It is such a joy to attempt to capture its beauty, needing to be in the right place at the right time.
Well at Hopi Point I was in the right place at the right time. Watching the approach and formation of a UNIQUE AND SURREAL CLOUD!! A MAMMATUS CLOUD!
While associated with thunderstorms, mammatus clouds are not necessarily an indicator of severe weather. Mammatus result from the sinking of moist air into dry air. They are in essence upside-down clouds."
They derive their name from their appearance, like the bag-like sacs that hang beneath the cloud resemble cow's udders. But I think the pin curl shape of a mammatus cloud, reminds me of curly hair. I love and photograph clouds in all their stages, but none like these, they were phenomenal!
They looked this way because they were full of turbulence! Turbulence calls to mind the word confusion. So all of this turbulence in the cloud became a Hair-raising "Canyon Cloud Of Confusion!"

Magnificent! Looks like the cloud is confused, but am wondering is there are tornados in the mix! FLG
Janet Marie replied:
Debby dear!! Thank you so much for your visit to my gallery and commenting on so much of my photography. Love your expressions and impressions of my work!! This cloud had a lot of turbulence going on (turbulence is a synonym of confusion, like the turbulent 60's had a lot confusion hence given that name), creating all those curls (like a white powdered wig worn by solicitors in the United Kingdom). Heather King has named me the Cloud Whisperer, and I tell you I have never witnessed such a cloud. I followed it as it crossed the Grand Canyon at Hopi Point off Hermits Rest Road. This afternoon system is what created the early morning sunrise experience of Mather's Majesty!! I appreciate the FLG too! 💕

Colossal Cloud Capture, Janet Marie. It was such a beautiful afternoon along the west rim viewpoints. West of Grand Canyon village that is. Lovely tree silhouettes that are so typical of those we find along the rim. These clouds brought us rain that night and our beautiful almost surreal Thursday morning!...,,fav / like
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Jerry for your visit and your encouraging words and commendation!! I discovered this cloud and was following its progress while you were visiting with Abbey, such a lovely young lady traveling from New Jersey. It was great when it hovered over the Grand Canyon, ever changing. Here it was at it full potential with its phenomenal appearance. So glad you enjoyed my photography of this colossal cloud!! I appreciate the support with the fav/like too!! 💕💕💕💕

You have shared not just an image but an eMotion and I Thank you for that ))) Love ya ))) Hugs ))) e ~
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much dear Eva!! So glad you were able to come visit my gallery and share your EvaR wonderful expressions and impressions of my photography (Heather King has nicknamed me the Cloud Whisperer). Which maybe I am, because I have so many WONDERful cloud photography to share. I love them in all their stages, from a sunrise to a sunset and everything in between!!! So many are busy just looking at the Rock Formations (some are not even doing that) and not looking up at the grandeur hovering over the Grand Canyon, making it even more special and beautiful!! Remember the song I shared with you "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack? A line in that song is Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance...I hope you dance, I hope you dance. So some choose to sit it out, but I choose to dance. I was in awe that second day with all the wonderful clouds and I am so glad I have the photography to bring it all back. I am so glad you get me and my feelings, even all the way to Macedonia. I am glad I could share that eMotion with you, I try to do that for everyone. I hope others will feel as you do, even in the smallest amount!! 💕💕💕
