Description
Despite being a hot, humid day in late May, hence the haze in the distance, I still say, "What a spectacular view from the Acropolis," of Mount Lycabettus or Lycabettus Hill. It stands 908 feet or 277 meters above sea level, and is the highest point of Athens.
It's a beautiful walk up, via a circular path, but can be a test of endurance and a challenge in summer. To meet that challenge, there is a funicular or cliff railway that can take you to the top of the hill. The downside is it moves inside a closed tunnel, so there is no view on the way up or down.
You can see why it is considered an oasis in the middle of the city, with its limestone rocky slopes covered with pines and low shrubs. On the top of the rock, is a large open-air amphitheater, which hosts world acclaimed musicians throughout the summer period.
Lycabettus, the older of the names for this mountain, means "where the wolves go" or "path of the wolves" since in the ages of Pericles, it is believed that wolves used to roam freely in this mountain.
