Description
π Come visit more biodiverse beauty, in my gallery "Cave Creek Cnyn Portal AZ" π
Nestled in the Chiricahua Mountains of Southeastern Arizona, 150 miles east of Tucson, lies Cave Creek Canyon, a hidden gem (as I didn't know this was here before), with spectacular rhyolite cliffs, pine-oak woodland, serene flowing streams, and abundant flora. Cave Creek Canyon has been dubbed, βArizonaβs Yosemite.β It is part of the Coronado National Forest Recreation Area.
Some of that flora includes the Christmas Cholla Cactus or the Tasajillo. It is the thinnest stemmed of the Cholla Cactus. Their vibrant, brightly colored fruits caught my eye. I just wanted to share the biodiversity of Cave Creek Canyon.
The fruit remain on the plant all through midwinter, hence the common name of Christmas Cholla. The fruits are one way to distinguish this plant from the similar Arizona pencil cholla, as that has dull green fruits. For both the Cholla Cactus and myself, we are seeing, "The Fruits Of Our Labor!"
You access this splendor, from the tiny town of Portal, which sits at the mouth of the Canyon.

Skinniest cholla I have ever seen, Janet. Nothing escapes your attention!..lFav / like
Janet Marie replied:
Skinny like the Pencil Cholla Cactus, but it doesnβt have the bright orange fruits. When itβs wintertime, colors like this jump out to me. I have become quite smitten and with a renewed appreciation for succulents, as they produce beauty among the thorns. I am glad you like it and have chosen it as one of your favorites too! ππππ
