My Arizona home is situated on a desert acre, surrounded by Sonoran Desert flora. New cactus pop up all the time, but this one caught my eye for sure. The generally flat paddles of an Englemann Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia engelmannii), had an "S-shaped" curve to it.
I couldn't resist capturing this oddity before. It's now two weeks later. We just had some hard summer monsoon rains, splashing some desert sand all over cactus paddles, which now includes a heart-shaped paddle. This family of diversified cacti is what you look like "After A Day At The Beach," wouldn't you say. Better hit the showers.

Only if you get too close will they hurt. I donโt mind the spines, itโs the tiny, fine barbed bristles on the areole that get you, as they penetrate the skin. That is what determines these succulents as a cactus. Because ALL cactus are succulents, but not ALL succulents are cactus. They have to have areoles with glochids to be considered a cactus. The "S" shape curve certainly is an oddity, along with the heArt-shaped paddle, too.
