Description
đź’•I would love for you to view more of my bird photography, in my "Desert Birds-Arizona" Collectionđź’•
Gambel's quail are fairly conspicuous, in the Arizona Sonoran Desert. These birds come wondering into our natural desert acre, from our neighbor's yard. Crossing a residential street to get to our neighbor's acre, coming from open range State land. I suppose they reside there, but take the trek eventually to get to my yard. They are rather poor fliers, and spend almost all their time on the ground.
They meander in looking for seeds, staying for but a short while. So that means that generally I am not able to capture them, because they will take off if they feel a sense of danger.
This day I was ready for them. They are constantly on the move, being wary of birds of prey. So I had to be stealthy and quick, using my long lens. This female, "Quizzical Quail," was looking about the green vegetation, created by all the winter rain (has since been removed by me), hoping to find food. A desert cottontail must have determined that they found seeds, so it joined in the fun too. I discovered that viewing some of these images I took.
Soon they will be coming with their babies. I am looking forward to that.

You got a picture of those crazy birds! They run so fast. Great catch!
Janet Marie replied:
Actually I have lots of images of quails, male and female. Thank you, Susan, for visiting my gallery and sharing such a nice comment about this. They are very skittish birds, but then I guess most are to some degree.
Nieves Egelkraut
nature's best. I love the scene and the retention of natural colors.
Janet Marie replied:
Nieves! Thank you for your delightful comment about my photography. I really appreciate it! I am glad you love the retention of natural colors, as that is what I do with the majority of my work (I do have a bit of fun with a few of my works though).

My favorite bird of the southwest. I always love seeing them, especially when the little ones are all lined up behind them. What a beautiful image, Janet. Masterful work. L/F Featured in American Desert Southwest. PS -- I agree with Chance that FAA should always notify us when people reply to comments. My notifications are so sporadic that I have missed some very nice comments from people, including you, Chance and even Jerry. I always feel so bad. You all hit the nail on the head with your commentary.
Janet Marie replied:
Quails are so sweet and precious for sure. I would like to capture them more often than I seem to be able to. I am so glad to know that you feel it’s a beautiful image, and masterful. I believe Chance was talking about being notified when someone replies to our comments and our replies to those who comment on our work. Like will you see this reply I am making to your comment? In Behind the Scenes it lists all our comments each day, also in the Activity Stream Page. FAA also emails us with comments made. Since I Favorite the images I comment on, I can go to Favorites and see whether someone replied to my comments. But it would be nice to be given notice of a reply. I don’t think that will happen, as so many do not give a reply, or they just say Thank you. Others will comment on our work instead. After I reply, I like to favorite it, so that my reply shows up in the Activity Stream Page. But aside from that, thank you for the HOMEPAGE FEATURE in your marvelous Art Group, “AMERICAN DESERT SOUTHWEST!” I am honored to have my artwork recognized in this special way! I truly appreciate it. Janet 💕

Revisit 2.0 I know what you mean about wondering if those ever saw our replies. I really wish FAA had a feature that notified us on here when people replied to our comments. Kind of like bow social platforms seem to do it. I've gone back to photos of various people I've commented on and saw a really nice engaging reply I never got to reply to since I didn't know. I am glad you appreciate my babble as well! I totally agree on the substance aspect.
Janet Marie replied:
Chance! Thank you for the revisit, and sharing your inciteful thoughts about commenting and replying. If I write a comment of substance, I always favorite it, hence I am able to return to read any replies. If any are wanting to get to know fellow artists, it’s a good way to do that. I have never thought of it as babble from you, just myself. I am glad you appreciate it though and thoughts of substance. I mean, how many times can you hear the proverbial “great capture.” Although I have to admit, I seem to get more than that when people visit my gallery, and I truly appreciate it! Janet 💕

Awesome capture, I love these gorgeous birds. We have so few of them in Pahrump that it is always a treat to see them, and especially their little chicks as they scurry along! They always make me smile, as did this lovely photo. L/F
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you so much Jane for visiting my gallery and sharing your beautiful comment about this. I am delighted that you love this and feel it’s an awesome capture, and that it’s a treat for you to view quails. Their babies are like dust bunnies with legs. As I was sharing with Chance, about my previous home having the desert behind our home, the quails were very comfortable with us. So much so, that the last two springs we were there, mama quail laid her eggs under our lawn mower. So we witnessed them scurrying across our pool decking out through the view wall to their desert home. A few had a trouble doing it. So we had to scoop them up and help them out. Such a great experience. Mom and dad did come back for them. I am glad I could make you smile, and I appreciate you choosing this as one of your favorites. 💕Janet

Revisiting. thanks for the kind reply and the wonderful story about the quails and feeding them! Where I live is much to urban to see them, but I am lucky to see a lizard once in a great while. Quails are probably my favorite creature of our region.
Janet Marie replied:
You are so welcome. I am delighted that you got to see my reply and enjoyed by babble. I always wonder, if those who comment, see my reply to what they say. Especially when they write something of substance, which is so appreciated. It's like getting a letter from a friend. I get to know my fellow artists so much better that way. I understand about the urban living, as for 21 years we lived in two-story townhouse, surrounded by other two-story buildings behind Jim Click Ford. We had to go to the Saguaro National Park (was a monument until 1994), Sabino Canyon, or Mt. Lemmon to enjoy the natural world, see sunsets etc. But the last 19 years we have been able to enJOY our lovely Sonoran Desert at its best. Right in our backyard so to speak. Lizards were all that we saw too, and hearing the cooing of the mourning doves. So get out more and visit these places are so close by.

adorable capture and fascinating description of these neat little birds. I never saw them until I moved here. now they are among my favorite sights! looking forward to seeing more from you.
Janet Marie replied:
Chance! You always have such a delightful way of expressing yourself about my artwork. I really appreciate it that you take the time to read my story behind the work. They are such a sweet bird, with a soft beauty of about them. The quails that visit us are not as friendly as where we lived before. The Hidden Hills Wash was right behind our U.S. Home of 8 years. They never flew away. They learned that we gave them seed twice a day, thrown in the protection of a large creosote. We had view wall that looked into the desert, so we could enjoy them, and all the critters that partook. If we were late in putting out the seed, they would get up on the wall looking for us, or hopping down on our grass island. With a “aren’t you going to feed us attitude.” They passed this on to future generations, as they did this for 8 years. The moment we opened our glass sliding door, they came running from everywhere. It was quite a treat. It was an interesting area, because we had what is called a common area of the natural desert, untouched by the builders. So these quails and their babies lived out in that desert. In the past, homes were built right up to the washes in Tucson, so they cemented them. But now they leave them natural, and leave a buffer area. I look forward to sharing more. Janet 💕
