Description
It was glorious spring day in the Arizona Sonoran Desert. The desert becomes a showy display of color. It was no exception at the Saguaro National Park East (USA). Despite a not so wet Winter, the Ocotillo blooms were just, "Bursting With Brilliance!" Towering above my head, I zoomed to the very top, to get a closer look. What blue sky we had that day!
One of the most amazing, of the many unique and unusual plants found, native to the Arizona Sonoran Desert, is the ocotillo. Their name in Spanish means, "Little Torch," named after the fiery red flowers, clustered indeterminately at the tips of each stem. They are not a cactus, but a shrub.
Much of the year the plant appears to be an arrangement of large spiny dead sticks, although closer examination reveals that the stems are partly green. With rainfall, the plant quickly becomes lush with ovate green leaves. The bright crimson flowers appear especially after rainfall in spring, summer, and occasionally fall. The butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are attracted to these flowers. You can see why.

This is just so amazing and beautiful! Wonderful capture of course!!
Janet Marie replied:
Thank you Sharon. Ocotillo blooms certainly are amazing, as this plant transforms from looking like a dead stick in winter, to leafed out beauty and blooms, come springtime.
Douglas Taylor
Marvelous macro of these wonderful and unique flowers, Janet! V/F
Janet Marie replied:
Douglas! Thank you for checking out my photography gallery, and sharing such a nice comment. I really appreciate that and the fave. Getting in close with the ocotillo blooms, can be a challenge, but a real treat in the end. This plant or shrub (mistakenly called a cactus) has many different looks, depending on the time of year, and rainfall.

Your desert flowers are magnificent, only competing with your knowledge of the various plants.

Mary, wow! What a marvelous thing to say. I am gobSMACKED. I love what I photograph, and so I love to share the story. I am delighted that you have taken notice. Especially being a successful novelist, your comment means a lot.

Bright and beautiful flowers Janet, so pretty against the blue sky!...L/T
Janet Marie replied:
Ocotillo flowers are a standout for sure, gracing the tops of the ocotillo branch. Often looking like dead sticks if they haven’t leafed out yet. Not the case this beautiful spring day at Saguaro National Park. They were full of leaves and blooms. Thank you stopping by and sharing your lovely thoughts about this and for the Tweet.

Nieves! Thank you for visiting my gallery and sharing such a nice comment about my photography. I really appreciate that! These flowers are on the top of a plant that most of the time looks like a tall, dead stick. Then they leaf during rains, and flower in the spring. Saguaro National Park shared the brilliance of these. Janetđź’•

I really like you getting up-close and personal with these ocotillo blooms. Saguaro National Park, in Tucson, Arizona, certainly was bursting with brilliance on this early spring day. You truly showcase how utterly lovely the Sonoran Desert can be. They are mistakenly called a cactus as you said, but are a shrub. A uniquely beautiful one at that!
